Talk Talk Talk
To say finding something to blog about for this week was challenging would be an understatement to say the least, but the few things we did go over had somewhat of a pull on me. the obvious theme of the last two stories we read revolved around conversing or in simplest terms... talking, and it got me thinking just how much this generation spends talking to each other through text, snap, insta, and facebook, etc, but being the most connected generation has shown us that we are also the most separated. Everyone talking about politics, everyone arguing, but no one is talking about things that actually matter. Now before you take to the comments to witch trial me on how my morals are erroneous let me explain myself, I want you to stop and think about the last time our school or any in the district took the time actually address and try to aid their students when it comes to mental or emotional health. Got it? Now think about the times they addressed it when it wasn't following an event of a student harming themselves or actually ending their own life, what's the number now?
We're so quick to bellow our political party stance or turn on each other when someone has an opposing viewpoint but when it comes to the battleground in some people's minds, it gets swept under the rug and forgotten. Unless someone decides they can't take it anymore and actually acts on their emotions, then you hear teachers and counselors actually taking a moment away from unconsciously causing their students anxiety and sleep deprivation to address what we should be tending to throughout the school year. And when people are actually willingly going to their peers and counselors and family members to talk about how they feel, we get back to business as usual and cross our fingers hoping it won't happen again so we can finish the school year without any problems. Just in the eve of change and success, it gets pushed aside and dubbed as a bump in the road. "wow I think I might have depression" "oh that's sad, did you sign up for your ap exams yet?" now thats a stretch but its genuinely what it feels like, a school focused so much on the success of its students that we don't actually stop to think about what a successful life looks like. Is it one full of stress, depression, anxiety, and accepting it as a simple side effect of life? Or is it actually being happy and knowing when to put everything down and talk to someone. Addressing the issues and feelings you have with people is one of the many privileges a connected generation like our own has, let's do the future a favor and end these toxic traditions once and for all. Don't be afraid to speak up.
Yours truly

Oh my god, Connor, this is so deep, so sad, and so good. I couldn't even fathom thinking of an idea so profound from the materials we were given this past week. Amazing job spinning your thoughts into a great post. I'm completely in agreement with you.
ReplyDeleteHey, Connor. I agree - it seems like everyone is so overwhelmed and wrapped up in our own problems and concerns sometimes that we don't actually hear when others around us are suffering. Hope you know that my door is always open if you want to talk about anything.
